The prices of most of the vegetables topped Tk 100 a kilogram on the kitchen markets in Dhaka city over the week ending Friday due to a supply shortage, traders said.
The prices of some other commodities including rice, eggs, and broiler chicken also remained high over the week. Traders said that the prices of vegetables continued to rise on the wholesale market in the past month due to a supply shortage as floods and downpours damaged crops across the country. ‘The supply of vegetables in the Dhaka city markets has dropped by nearly 50 percent due to flooding, which has submerged many farmlands in the northern region of the country,’ said Bangladesh Kanchamal Arot Malik Samiti president Emran Master. He also said that heavy downpours caused significant damage to crops in other parts of the country. Emran said that if the flood situation persisted, the vegetable supply would not improve, and prices might remain high. The prices of vegetables increased by Tk 20-30 a kilogram in the city over the week. Aubergine sold for Tk 120-140 a kilogram, papaya for Tk 40–50 a kilogram, bitter gourd for Tk 100-110 a kilogram, pointed guard for Tk 80 a kilogram, okra for Tk 90-100, string beans for Tk 110-130 a kilogram, teasle gourd for Tk 100-110 a kilogram, ridge gourd for Tk 90-100, sneak gourd for Tk 90-100 and tomato for Tk 280 a kilogram on Friday. The prices of green chilies remained excessively high and the item sold for Tk 380-400 a kilogram in the city on the day. Although the prices of eggs decreased slightly, the prices of the item still remained high and sold for Tk 58-60 a hali on the city’s kitchen markets on Friday. The price of broiler chicken remained high over the week and the item sold for Tk 200 a kilogram on the day. The prices of rice also maintained an upward trend and coarse and medium-quality varieties of rice sold for Tk 54–60 a kilogram on Friday. The price of lower-grade Miniket sold for Tk 65-70 a kilogram over the week. The fine variety of Miniket sold for Tk 75–82 a kilogram and Najirshail for Tk 80-90 a kilogram on Friday. Two market monitoring teams of the commerce ministry on Friday visited the Shah Ali City Corporation Market and Shanir Akhra Market in the city. The teams fined several business establishments Tk 4,500 during separate drives in the city. Earlier on October 9, two market monitoring teams of the commerce ministry fined Tk 12,500 to several traders for irregularities during separate drives in the city. |
